Who We Are

TravelSafety.net was founded by Stephen Pike, a global safety professional with over 27 years of frontline experience in high-risk industries including mining, oil & gas, construction, and international project logistics. Stephen has worked all over the world, training thousands on risk management, emergency preparedness, and crisis response—skills that are just as critical when you’re on vacation as they are on a job site.

After decades of travel in both professional and personal capacities, Stephen recognized a growing need: travelers were eager to get back out into the world but lacked clear, trustworthy information about how to stay safe doing it. That’s where TravelSafety.net comes in.

Today on TravelSmart News we cover major travel-safety events that every traveler should know about as winter storms intensify and global security risks evolve. In Iowa a regional jet from Delta Air Lines slid off the runway during landing at Des Moines International Airport under icy conditions. All onboard were safely evacuated and no injuries were reported, but the airport temporarily shut down, flights were canceled or diverted, and many passengers faced long delays. ([New York Post][1])

We also discuss a recent security alert issued by the U.S. Embassy in Dar es Salaam for travelers in Tanzania ahead of planned protests. The advisory warns of possible unrest, transportation disruptions, curfews and limited access to services in some regions. ([Capital FM][2])

On a brighter note for global aviation, we share an important update from Airbus: most of the A320 jets recently recalled for software updates have already been fixed and cleared to fly. That significantly reduces the disruption many feared, and helps restore confidence in air travel operations across multiple carriers worldwide.

If you travel regularly or book trips for clients, these are the kinds of stories that can impact your plans — and sometimes at a moment’s notice.

Winter Storm Chaos Delta Jet Skids Off Runway and New Travel Alerts
In today’s TravelSmart News update, Stephen breaks down three major travel stories that every traveler should know about right now. Airbus has issued a recall on specific A320 aircraft after a dramatic JetBlue incident revealed a software problem that caused the plane to suddenly drop in altitude. This update arrives during the busy Thanksgiving travel period in the United States and travelers may feel its impact through delays or last minute aircraft substitutions.

We also look at the United Kingdom’s announcement that its new Electronic Travel Authorization system will be fully enforced starting February twenty fifth, twenty twenty six. This change will require travelers to complete digital pre clearance before boarding flights to the UK and marks a major shift toward the next era of border processing.

Our final story takes us to the Caribbean where a missing American cruise passenger in Sint Maarten has been found safe after leaving her ship and checking into a hotel without notifying anyone. Stephen also shares a personal story from a cruise in Cozumel where a similar situation unfolded and created hours of concern on board.

US Air Rage, Thailand Flooding, and Madagascar Unrest: TravelSmart News Nov 28, 2025
The U.S. Department of Transportation just launched a major new civility campaign called “The Golden Age of Travel Starts With You.” It’s a nostalgic push to restore dignity, elegance, and respect in the skies… but does it actually address the real issues causing today’s spike in air-rage and unruly passengers?

In this video, I break down what the DOT’s announcement really means, why passenger behavior has become so volatile, and the deeper systemic issues that polite messaging alone won’t fix. From assaults on flight attendants to the explosive growth of unruly passenger incidents, we explore the real numbers and the real reasons behind modern inflight conflict.

As someone who spent nearly 30 years in global industrial safety and risk management, I’ve seen first-hand what happens when systems are designed for efficiency instead of human behavior. And aviation is reaching a breaking point.

I also share two key observations:
• That the relentless stripping away of comfort, space, and dignity in economy travel has lowered the bar for expected behavior.
• And that I’m not convinced the current “dress better, behave better” strategy will meaningfully change outcomes.

Near the end, I also tease the launch of the Certified Travel Safety Advisor (CTSA) program, going live next week — the first professional certification designed to help travel advisors elevate their value, improve client safety, and navigate the complex world of modern travel risks.

If you want to be part of the next evolution of travel safety, make sure to subscribe and stay tuned.
